Ask the Temple Pillars

A monk asked Shitou, “What is the meaning of the ancestral teacher [Bodhidharma] coming from the west?”

Shitou said, “Ask the temple pillars.”

The monk said, “I don’t understand.”

Shitou said, “I understand even less than you.”
